Service Description

Friday Art Class I: Landscape, Memories of Place January 9th - February 13th. Make Up Session Friday, February 20th. Paintings that capture a memory of a place are meaningful, personal works of art. They have the power to transport us in space and time and evoke memory and meaning. How do we compose and transpose a place into a visual story? You will be guided in the style of your choosing (realistic, romantic, impressionistic, expressive). This soul care course includes six weeks of art classes (6, two hour classes) with an option of a make-up class on February 20th if you miss one session. Students will purchase their own supplies in this course. Bring a blank canvas to the first session and additional supplies will be discussed during session 1 (primarily brush selection and acrylic paint selection) . Canvas: Any size 16" x 20" through 24" x 30" welcome. Please no smaller or larger canvases than recommended for this course. Beginner and intermediate students are encouraged to register with all skill levels welcome. Ages 14+ welcome. In this course we will not only learn to create powerful compositions of formational places in our lives, but tell a story. Initially, you will be guided through exercises to help you discover the story of the place that you want to tell and use photographs, images or visual memories in order to construct a meaningful composition. We will learn to create a solid compositional framework and practice atmospheric/linear perspective, explore color palettes, layering techniques and mark making. Each session we will have a bit of discussion related to the course. This will develop a sense of community and your understanding of the ideas and techniques examined. We will explore questions such as “How do places play a role in our formation?”, “What are the benefits of making works of art about places and/or landscapes?”, “Where are some of your best memories? What made that place special” and “How does an artist use/non use of various types of perspective impact the feeling of their work ”? Course taught by Melinda Watters.
