Service Description
Monday Night Art Class: Acrylic Paintings inspired by Poetry January 12th- February 23rd (We will not meet the 1st Monday in February so members may attend the Paris Poetry Society Meeting if they would like). Make up session will be March 9nd for a missed session. Many meaningful paintings inherently carry a poetic feeling or message. Regardless of your previous knowledge of poetry or poetic writing, this course will challenge you to find passages that inspire you, stir your soul, or share some truth that would be hard to articulate any other way than a poem & painting. We will explore how artists in the past have interacted with and expressed poetic writings, explore our own leanings stylistically and create a meaningful piece of art that captures the heart of a poetic writing of your choosing. Sample poems will be provided for those with no prior meaningful reference or preference. This course will include six weeks of 2 hour art classes with an option of a make up class on March 9th for any missed session. We will not meet on the first Monday of the month so that anyone who wishes to attend the Paris Poetry Society gathering at the Plaza Art Gallery will be encouraged to do so. Students will purchase their own supplies for this course. Bring a blank canvas (choose a size no smaller than 16" x 20" and no larger than 24" x 30") for the first session and additional supplies will be discussed at that time. Easels provided. Some supplies may be borrowed for limited use (brushes, water cups, pallet paper, etc.). All skill levels encouraged to register. Ages 14+ welcome. We do not allow non-participants to stay and watch during the class as it can be a distraction to some students. We will consider how to choose a subject, create a powerful composition, determine a color palette, and pace your work. Beginners will be guided in how to begin a painting, create pre-work sketches and translate their ideas visually. Each session will include some poetry reading and discussion related to the course. This will develop a sense of community and your understanding of the ideas and techniques presented. You will be encouraged to explore a style of your choosing (realism, romanticism, impressionism, expressionist, modern) and the teacher will guide you in your understanding and expression of that style. Course facilitated by Melinda Watters.
